Tree Risk Assessment

The Benefits of Having Trees
Tree Owner Responsibilities
Despite the immense benefits trees provide, they also pose a risk to people, property and activities. Property owners have a duty of care to ensure their trees do not pose an unreasonable level of risk. It is not possible to eliminate all risks associated with trees – unless they are completely removed. Therefore, a systematic approach is required to assess and manage their potential hazards.

What is a Tree Risk Assessment?
Tree risk assessment is the systematic process to identify, analyze and evaluate tree risks. The task of a tree risk assessor is to identify targets likely to be impacted by a failed tree or branches, assess the likelihood of failure and estimate the potential consequences if failure and impact occur. The ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) has developed a qualification program for tree risk assessors that follows the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Manual as well as the ISA BMP (Best Management Practices) – Tree Risk Assessment. This qualification is known as TRAQ.
TRAQ Qualified Tree Risk Assessor
There are several levels of assessment and many reasons why a property owner may decide to have a tree risk assessment performed. Oftentimes, a risk assessment is performed when determining if a high value tree can be preserved instead of removed. Understanding and evaluating potential hazards as well as available mitigation options can mean the difference between losing a veteran tree or maintaining it for years to come. Alternatively, an assessment carried out by a TRAQ qualified tree risk assessor can identify defects in trees that necessitate their removal and so it can be done proactively before a failure occurs.
Chris Brown, owner of Higher Place Tree Care, is a TRAQ qualified Tree Risk Assessor and can assist you if a formal tree risk assessment is something you require.
